11 Characteristics Of Spiritual Maturity

If you are trying to build something worthwhile, something you want to last for a very long while, you must start with a step. As the saying goes, “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a step.” Our spiritual maturity is very important to God because, in the course of our walk with Him, we experience trials that will help make our faith stronger. The prerequisites for being spiritually mature according to the standard of our Lord Jesus Christ is possessing the fruits of the Holy Spirit, Gal 5:22-23; “But the fruits of the spirit are; Joy, Peace, Love, Long suffering, Gentleness, Meekness, Faith, Temperance, against such there is no law”. You can’t tell a person’s spiritual maturity from carnal works. Gal 5:16; “This I say then; walk in the spirit and ye shall not fulfil the lusts of the flesh”. This guide will reveal to you those clues that you can look out for to understand your spiritual status, whether you are a babe or an adult. With that being said, let’s get to the business of the day, here are some characteristics of spiritual maturity.

  • Possesses Self Control 

In layman terms, this is simply your temperament. A spiritually mature person exercises self-control in all things. Such a person will resist bad habits and focus their energies into developing new ones. According to dictionary meaning; self-control is the ability to master one’s desire and impulses. This is actually a very huge feature of a spiritually mature Christian. Still and all, you might want to note that self-control is a telltale sign of spiritual maturity.

It takes a lot to control your feelings and anger when you are provoked or accused wrongly. Only a spiritually mature person can brush off trials and temptations without showing it physically. A person who displays temperance is not easily swayed and attracted to vanity. It’s very easy to know a spiritually mature Christian from this virtue because it will eventually surface in their everyday dealings with people. Gal 5:23; Meekness, Temperance, against such there is no law.

  • Loves Unconditionally: Characteristics of Spiritual Maturity 

A person who is spiritually mature won’t take offences to heart. They’ll love everyone with the love of Christ Jesus as he is our perfect example. So if you are inquisitive as to whether you are spiritually mature, you can get your answers if you possess this virtue or not. The kind of love being talked about here is genuine love. The feeling of care that makes you hate seeing a person get sad or hurt, especially those close to you, after all, charity begins at home, 

A person who loves God is spiritually mature. Loving God entails studying his word, praying, obeying His commands and basically doing the things that will please God’s heart. Matt 22:37; Jesus said unto him, And thou shalt love the Lord they God with all thy heart, and with all they soul, and with all the mind, John 13:34. 

  • An Embodiment Of Peace

A person that is mature spiritually will be peaceful in all his dealings. He or she lives and leads a peaceful life. Mark 9:50; Salt is good: but if the salt has lost its saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves and have peace one with another. A brawler or troubleshooter is not mature in any way. Gal 5:22; But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith.

Nonetheless, if you want to check out for any characteristics of spiritual maturity in your life or someone else, look for this virtue.  A spiritually mature person has a deep-rooted affection for virtually everyone around him and this quality enables him or her to live a life free from trouble and noise.

  • A Joyful Soul: Characteristics of Spiritual maturity 

A spiritually mature person can’t be sad, because he or she finds strength in the joy of the Lord. The happiness that emanates from a spiritual person is big enough to touch the lives of those around him or her. In other words, God’s joy is infectious. No problem at all can totally take away the joy of a spiritually mature person. He or she cannot break down completely during hard situations, this is because their emotional foundation is balanced on Christ’s word.

  • Well-Grounded On the Truthfulness Of The Word Of God 

A person who is spiritually mature can’t be easily deceived or swayed by false sermons. He or she can quickly and easily recognise a falsehood. Spiritually mature persons are rooted in the truth of God’s word. 2 Tim 2:15; Study to show thyself approved, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

  • Looks Forward To Eternity With God

A person who is spiritually mature lives life on earth with an eternal perspective knowing full well that we are only sojourners with a temporary life on earth. Such a person will strive to attain newer and greater spiritual heights while making conscious efforts to build a stronger relationship with God.

  • A Worker In Christ’s Vineyard 

A spiritually mature person will be in the workforce in the church he or she worships. This is because such a person is ready to serve God selflessly and propagate His work. Someone who is spiritually grown is zealous for God’s work and is ready to leave everything for service. He or she won’t put work or even family before God, knowing fully well that God is sovereign, Matt 10:37; He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

  • Knows Right From Wrong: Characteristics of spiritual maturity 

A person that is spiritually mature can easily recognize right from wrong by the working of the Holy Spirit in him or her. Such a person can discern the truth, this enables him or her to abstain from false judgements and stay away from trouble. Hebrews 5:14; But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of us have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

If a situation is provided whereby, a person has to make judgements and pronounce verdicts in response to delicate issues. A spiritually mature person will be able to solve the problem objectively without mistakes as he or she is led by the spirit. Room 8:14; For as many as are led by the spirit, they are the sons of God.

  • Leads By Example: Spiritual Maturity Characteristics 

A spiritually mature person reflects the character of God to the world. He or she will live life in accordance to God’s will while following the footsteps of Jesus Christ. 2 Tim 4:2; Preach the word, be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

While on earth, Jesus went about teaching the truth of the Kingdom, he has set an example for all to follow, and those who love him and keep his statutes to heart will definitely follow in his footsteps. John 13:15; For I have given you an example; that ye should do as I have done to you. Spiritually mature individuals live admirable lives that others will desire to emulate.

  • A Strong Believer: Characteristics of Spiritual Maturity 

A spiritually mature Christian has ‘Faith’. He or she is a very firm believer and has in-depth knowledge of the word of God. Luke 17:6; And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of a mustard seed, ye shall say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root and be thou planted into the sea, and it should obey you.

Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. According to the dictionary meaning, it is the process of forming or understanding abstractions, ideas, or beliefs, without empirical evidence, experience or observation. It takes a lot of gut to trust God even when the future seems bleak. That in itself is the concept of spiritual maturity.

  • The Definition Of Meek: Spiritual Maturity Characteristics

A spiritually mature person is very humble. You don’t know their status from their dispositions, they are always lowly in heart and address everyone as an elder who is far more knowledgeable than them even when that isn’t the case. Titus 3:2; To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, showing meekness to all men.

When a person is spiritually mature, even if he or she is highly placed in society or occupies a very great position in an office, people outside of or even within their organization don’t know their status except they are close in relation to them or conduct a thorough investigation. Jesus Christ our perfect example of humility, was meek and lowly in heart. He served humans on earth whereas he was God. He washed the feet of his disciples all in an effort to show humility and set an example for all Christians to follow. A spiritually mature person reflects this virtue in his dealings with fellow humans.
